Art Gaysel: An Interview on the Queer Art Fair Transforming Miami BeacH
Art Gaysel has been bringing together queer artists from all over the world for years now. Can you tell us what first inspired you to create this unique event at Gaythering?
It all started with Stephan, who first introduced me to Art Basel and the Miami Art Week fairs. We would go every year and hit up two or three fairs each day over the weekend. Some of my favorite fairs were held at boutique hotels, with artists displaying their work in hotel rooms and representing themselves. As an artist myself, I understand how challenging it is to gain visibility in the art world—let alone to sell your work. Before Gaythering was a hotel, I hosted my own photography opening in one of the units. In a way, that was the first spark of Art Gaysel.
Each year brings something fresh to Art Gaysel. What is the theme or focus this year, and how did you choose it?
I used to do themes, but after the third year, I realized they limited the event's potential by restricting the range of artists who could participate. Now, we focus on curating exciting and diverse work without the constraints of a single theme. This year, we’re bringing back our Cabaret Collaboration with The Crown & Anchor Ptown, and there are some incredible new artists joining us. I think the lineup will surprise and inspire everyone.

When you look back at the past Art Gaysel events, what are some moments or works that have left a lasting impact on you?
Last year stands out, when I overheard people greeting each other with "Happy Gaysel." It was a full-circle moment—from starting with just six artists in the Library to becoming a full-scale art fair with a growing community and following. That’s when I knew Art Gaysel had truly become something special. What is it about queer art and artists that continues to inspire you to host Art Gaysel year after year? Queer people have been at the forefront of all art forms for centuries, and many of the most celebrated, sought-after artists identify as queer. There’s a unique perspective in queer art—a way of seeing and expressing the world that resonates deeply. Hosting Art Gaysel each year lets us celebrate and share these powerful expressions of our community’s experience with a wider audience. |
Art Gaysel seems to build community as much as it showcases art. How do you see it contributing to the larger Miami Beach and LGBTQ+ community?
Art Gaysel has solidified itself as one of the premier LGBTQ+ events in Miami. It not only brings visibility to queer artists but also creates a space where the community can gather, connect, and celebrate our shared identity and creative power. For artists considering joining Art Gaysel in the future, what would you say makes this event different from other art showcases or fairs? First, my advice is to let your art speak for itself. When artists reach out, I encourage them to share their work right off the bat rather than focusing only on logistics. And, know the name of the fair! It’s Art Gaysel—not Gay Basel. It’s about creating a distinct space where queer art and culture take center stage, unapologetically. |
