"YOU & I"
I love this piece bc the figures existed on the gallery wall in the blank space. For the environment that my figures exist in is really important. I grew up going to church and that was a huge part of my life. It was my security. My safe place. I was constantly told their was no place for my queer self though. So my thesis show was about allowing the figures to exist in this white space with no structural environment. To me that was the collapse of religion as my security...This piece was specifically about what my physical body did in public and the writing on the wall was my thoughts or intentions.
This piece is mainly focused on the heart. I use the heart and the color red to communicate things about our identity. In Christian symbolism those things are very important. So you should see that in some of my pieces. The heart in this piece is cut out from the canvas and barely hanging in there.
This is I guess a queer version of the image of Mary holding Jesus after his death. I've felt sacrifice in my relationships, so I related to that image.
He is I guess a transition painting to what I'm doing now. My thesis was the absence of structure and now I'm creating these geometric abstract environments for the figure to exist in. To me that is belief or faith. Sometimes seems like a fact or obvious other times it seems like an illusion. I'm really interested in that recently.
This is a small exercise of trying to figure out how to get the body existing in that space. This one is about when sex is magical and connects us.
"DRINK OF ME"
This one most successfully does what I'm trying to do in my newer work with the figures existing within and outside of the created environment. This one is about the blood of Christ and relationships with a supernatural power or another human. You have the central person drinking of the other person.
You have the other figure to the left looking, tired, rested, or drunk.
...tired, rested, or drunk.
My personal relationships
make me feel all of those things.
So that is what this is about.
